While Best Buy offers this service, so do hundreds of small electronics recyclers across the country. All of them are much smaller than Best Buy. Small businesses always need more, and a great way to support them is by recycling your computers with them rather than with Best Buy. If your county or municipality offers electronics recycling services, use them. They undoubtedly use a local electronics recycling company.

Free IT Athens is a 501(c)(3) (under Common Ground) and can accept tax-deductible donations. They are particularly interested in computers and monitors, and also accept printers and other computer accessories for a small processing donation.

Physical destruction can be used to prevent the recovery of personal or financial information from defective or obsolete hard drives. The goal with physical destruction is to damage the hard drive disk platters. To perform physical destruction, remove the hard drive from the computer and disconnect any cables or mounting brackets. Drilling multiple holes into the hard disk platters will preclude use of the hard drive and provide reasonable protection from recovery of the data written on the drive. The hard drive can also be subjected to physical force by pounding with a large hammer that will disfigure, bend, mangle or otherwise mutilate the hard drive so it cannot be reinserted into a functioning computer. If you choose physical destruction as the method removing data, be careful and be sure to wear safety equipment such as goggles and gloves.

Goodwill When a donation cannot be sold in a Goodwill store every effort is made to keep it out of local landfills through salvage and recycling efforts. Through the Reconnect program, a partnership with Dell, Goodwill recycles computers and computer related equipment of any brand and in any condition. HP (Hewlett-Packard) offers trade-in for HP or non HP equipment. There are also options to sell, donate or recycle. Recycling fees range from $1- - $34 per item, including pick up. Call 1-800-752-0900 or visit the website.

Sony launched a new website, www.sony.com/ecotrade, aimed at helping consumers find the best way to trade in or recycle their unwanted electronics. The site also includes a drop off center locator to find the nearest electronics recycling center to consumers. Accepts Sony or non-Sony brand electronics and allows customers to trade them for credit toward new Sony merchandise. Offer a free mail back option for Sony devices less than 25 pounds.

Not everyone quickly upgrades computers or other electronics. So before discarding a giant collection of cables and chargers, make sure to ask your friends and family members if they might be able to use them. According to court records in the prosecution of the doctor, Mark Rettenmaier, the scheme would work as follows: Customers with computer problems would take their devices to the Geek Squad for repair. Once Geek Squad employees had the devices, they would surreptitiously search the unallocated storage space on the devices for evidence of suspected child porn images and then report any hits to the FBI for criminal prosecution.

We disagree with the government's flawed argument. While the Best Buy service contract does put customers on notice that it will report child porn to the FBI if it finds it, we don't think it comes close to informing customers that Geek Squad employees are working for the FBI and will search their hard drives far beyond the scope of permission customers gave. As the Rettenmaier motions show, it appears that Best Buy staff searched unallocated storage space where the problems with the computer would not be found.

When a customer turns their devices over to Best Buy or any other repair shop, their consent to searches of their devices should be limited to where the problems with the computer are located. Thus, customers cannot plausibly consent to expansive searches of their entire devices.
