The criticism of the project as seeking out nudity for the sake of nudity certainly doesn't ring true here, and refusing to make a truly adult film for fear of an R rating seems like an obvious miscalculation. I'm not going to do a deep-dive into the plot, but suffice it to say that the story is standard zombie fare: a familiar starting setup of strangers locked out in an empty shopping mall surrounded by zombies. But Romero's film manages to be a little more than the sum of its parts: there are just enough standard zombie tropes to keep the film grounded, but also enough new ideas to keep things fresh.

Along with Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead[b] is one of the top five zombie-related films of all time, and has been remade twice, most notably on the big screen in 2004 as a remake of the original, Dawn of the Dead[m]. The film's enduring appeal is a testament to Romero's storytelling.

Notes: The Director's Cut of this film was released on October 25, 2008 and featured a new cut by Romero and Savini, along with a restoration of the original ending. The 2004 remake was directed by Zack Snyder, and the author of this review has not viewed that version. d2c66b5586
